With roots in public health nursing, Dr. Jayne Barker has been an active contributor to the mental health field for over 30 years. She has held positions of increasing responsibility at the local, regional, provincial and national levels. Jayne has a PhD in Interdisciplinary Studies from UBC focused on epidemiology in the mental health field. Jayne oversaw development of the BC Child and Youth Mental Health Plan – the first in Canada – which resulted in more than a doubling of resources and refocused services to include a stronger emphasis on early identification, intervention, prevention and promotion of mental health, as well as developing a range of evidence-based treatment and support services for mentally ill children and youth.
More recently, Jayne was Vice President of research at the Mental Health Commission of Canada for 4 years, where highlights of her work included overseeing the development and implementation of the $110M At Home/Chez Soi Project on Mental Health and Homelessness, and development of the first Mental Health Strategy for Canada. Jayne continues to be involved in mental health work through private consulting.
